A BLUE AND WHITE ‘LOTUS’ JARDINIÈRE, 17TH CENTURY
China. Of rectangular form, the slightly flaring sides supported on four short feet and finely painted with lotus scroll in deep underglaze blue, the rim with scrolling vines divided by ruyi heads enclosed by line borders, covered overall in a transparent glaze save for the base.
Provenance: From the collection of Erik Dons, and thence by descent. Erik Dons (1915-2002) was a Norwegian diplomat. He served as ambassador to Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines from 1956 to 1959, and to the People's Republic of China from 1959 to 1964. He wrote two books, Norsk statsborgerrett (1947) and FN i arbeid (1949).
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, shallow surface scratches, traces of use and some firing flaws, including dark spots and extensive firing cracks, the interior showing traces of use and water residue.
