The model is recognizable by its lack of date feature, allowing the dial to have a well-balanced design. Early examples of the 5513 featured a glossy black dial with gilt text, and in the mid-1960's, Rolex started producing the reference with a matte dial and white printing. These dials featured the depth rating with meters indicated first '200m=660ft', and towards the end of the 1960's, Rolex began producing dials with the depth rating that indicated feet first.The current lot is offered for sale by the family of the original owner and was purchased new in 1961/1962 when the gentleman was on active service in the Far East whilst serving with the Fleet Air Arm. Available to view are images of the original owner wearing the watch at HMS Simbang Air Station in Singapore in the early 1960s where he was part of the 845 Helicoptermando Squadron off the aircraft carrier HMS Albion. The watch, along with its owner, has seen action in the Indonesian Confrontation of the 60s in Sarawak and the jungles of North Borneo as well as being to Hong Kong, Atralia and Wales. During active service the watch was covered by a special green translucent cover to protect the glass from sunlight and weather. Since the 70s the watch has been stored safely away in a drawer.
