The forms of the characters are based on Zhou dynasty small seal script, the artist exaggerates their geometric forms and pictographic styling. The characters are balanced, yet they move with an animated energy. In the inscription, the artist notes the work is a 'collection of Zhou dynasty characters', but the content of the inscription adds another layer of meaning. The first two panels describe a literary gathering in a garden, replete with Daoist imagery. The third and fourth panels discourse on the archeological discovery of oracle bones, a major find made just thirty years earlier. Revealing the first traces of the Chinese written language, oracle bones were used by Shang dynasty rulers for divination. Huang Binhong notes that these character forms are today just used for poetry, not divination, although in the troubled times of 1932, everyone wants to know the future.
