PROPERTY FROM THE RICHARD MILHENDER COLLECTION An Album of Face Types19th century Album of ten double leaves, ink and color on paper, each leaf contains two to seven various sized cut-out portraits paintings. 12 1/8 x 21 3/4in (31 x 55cm), each double album leaf 肖像集 設色紙本 冊頁 十九世紀 Provenance: Ex Collection David Howard, London, England 來源: David Howard舊藏,倫敦 This fascinating collage of faces would have been used in an ancestor portrait studio. Presenting a variety of facial features, the book would assist family members to describe their relatives' appearance to the artist. Accuracy was important, and physiognomy--the ability to discern a person's character and fate from their characteristics--was a widely held belief. Several portraits in this book reveal the influence of early photography. Other books of this type are in the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Peabody Essex Museum. See Jan Stuart Woring the Ancestors , Freer Gallery of Art, 2001, p.83.
