PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION A Huanghuali Qin Table, Tiaoji18th century The massive, well-figured single board top half-lapped, mortise and tenoned to thick side panels carved with a single yuji cut-out centered above a scroll-work base. 31 1/2in (80cm) high; 80 1/4in (178.5cm) long; 15 1/4in (38.7cm) wide 18 世紀 黃花梨條几琴臺 Tables of this type,posed of a long single board mortise and tenoned to the sideboards, were used for holding musical instruments, reading handscrolls and other leisurely pursuits. See also the exhibition catalogue, Classical Chinese Wood Furniture , San Francisco Craft & Folk Museum, 1992, p. 21, no. 4, where a seventeenth century huanghuali table with everted flange ends is illustrated with a similar treatment of the side panels which are carved with an open design of a lingzhi or ruyi motif. A woodblock print from The Golden Lotus , 1695 edition is also illustrated and shows such a table in an intimate pavilion setting.
