Joseph H. Lee (1859-1946) was a British merchant and private antique dealer. Born in a wealthy merchant family in Lancaster, Joseph ran a textile factory with his father in the early 1870s. Until 1886, he was invited by a friend to Canton, engaging in overseas trade related to textiles. During this period, Joseph traveled a lot, including Hong Kong, Osaka and Yokohama. After exploring a large amount of porcelain, textiles and Buddhist statues, he began to collect elegant artwork, which established a foundation to start his antiques business in the United States. In his later years, he remained active in the antique collecting industry, selling and acquiring valuable Asian art until his death. Luckily, we got an old photo in the archive. The photo shows the living room of his residence. It is noteworthy that the bronze dragon censer (Lot #0033) displayed in the living room is in this auction. The collection that Joseph H. Lee bought in antique shops, are illustrated in description, respectively. These collections are also highlighted by the old invoice. We are proud to have a chance to display Joseph’s collection and hope you find the one you love.
