W. Patton, British, early-mid 19th Century- Sir John D'Oyly, 8th Baronet (1794-1869) driving his carriage and team with his wife outside the Collector's House, Bhagalpur; oil on canvas, signed 'W Patton' (lower right), bears inscriptions (on old labels attached to the reverse), 52 x 66.2 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Jane Meadowcroft, Sussex, 20 November 1991. Note: Sir John D'Oyly, 8th Bt, was a long-serving member of the East Indiapany and held many posts in India. He was married twice, to Charlotte Thompson, daughter of George Nesbitt Thompson, and then to Mary Fendall, daughter of John Fendall, Member of the Supreme Council at Calcutta. Bhagalpur, situated on the River Ganges in Bihar is the chief town and headquarters of the Bhagalpur district. Augustus Cleveland (1755-84) of the Bengal Civil Service was Collector and Judge there. He organised the Bhagalpur Hill Rangers, an auxiliary force which pacified the Paharia, or hill people, of the Santal Parganahs in the 1780s. Cleveland died at sea on a recuperative voyage to the Cape and his remains were returned to Calcutta for burial in Park Street Cemetery. Two memorials were erected to him in Bhagalpur, one in stone sent by the Court of Directors from England, the other, almost a shrine, built by his native staff and acquaintances.Relined. The paint surface is stable on the support. Settled craquelure. Unobtrusive stretcher bar marks. Very minor and occasional losses and abrasions. An unobtrusive vertical scratch(?) in the paint to the left of the front horses' front legs. Under UV light, scattered historic retouchings are evident in the lower half of the canvas, particularly in the left-most shutters and their shadows, in the front horses, and to the shrubbery centre right. In good condition.
