A Dutch or Scandinavian oak foot warmer, 18th century, with sliding front carved with initials GK, the top with pierced knot design, the sides with a bird perched on flower, the back with two parrots, brass carrying handle, 20.5cm high, 24cm wide, 19cm deep Note: Foot warmers were perforated boxes mostly heated by coals and widely used in Northern European countries such as Holland, Scandinavia and the British Isles during the 17th and 18th centuries. They were regarded as a necessity in damp, poorly-heated houses with stone or brick floors, but would have only been found in prosperous middle-class homes. They were also used in carriages to keep the occupants warm on long journeys. In order to spread the heat, they need perforated sides which made for elaborate carving. The top three stable shrinkage splits. Clean and polished overall. The base associated. The looks securing the carrying handle later. The handle with an old soldered repair to one side.
