The shaft decorated with cartouches of Roman Emperors, the base decorated with sphinxes. On fluted retracted rectangular feet. Applied cartouches as faces with feathered headdresses. Three curved light branches ending in ram heads, with vase-shaped nozzle and gadrooned drip pan. Central flame.Ø 35 cm, H 51 cm.Gilding in part rubbed. Perforations for a former fitting for electricity.The design of this relatively frequently executed model goes back to André-Charles Boulle. The design used by Boulle, in turn, goes back to the work of Jean Bérain. Versions of this early 18th century candelabrum model can be found at Waddesdon Manor (see The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor. Another pair of candelabras is mentioned in 1776 at the Château de Garges, owned by Blondel de Gagny, one of the greatest collectors of the 18th century. In 1788 and 1789, two more pairs of these candelabras were sold: the first to the Duke of Richelieu; the second "in the style of Boulle" with four light branches and sphinxes was in the collection of a certain Monsieur Coclers.---------------PAAR KERZENLEUCHTER "AUX SPHINGES"Louis XIV, Paris, um 1720.
