This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Fall of Wake Island 1941 stamp issued December 23, 1991. A key in Japan's grand plan to pummel the United States into submission, Wake Island first came under attack by Japanese forces only hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Although out-numbered, the gallant defenders were determined to hold their positions at any cost and Japan's initial thrust was repelled. A few days later, a formation of Japanese Mitsubishi G3M2 "Nell" bombers was greeted in the skies by four Grumman Wildcat fighters, the last of what had been a dozen airplanes on Wake. Below, Marines fired anti-aircraft guns. Repulsing the Japanese once again. The fight for the island would continue for several more weeks until the Japanese launched a massive invasion force which quickly overran the war-weary American troops.
