The painting depicts an official standing in the center, with attendants and guests surrounding him, artist signature and mark Chen Hongshou on the left side.||Provenance: Christie's Hong Kong, November 1999, Lot 252||明 陳洪綬 賞荷圖 設色絹本 立軸|款識:溪山鴻壽。|邊跋:老蓮人物畫,精品佳作不多,難獲一見,今有幸讀,算眼福不淺矣。戊寅夏,楊善深題識。|鈐印:陳鴻壽印(白)、章侯氏(白)、四湖居士(朱文)、曼生審定(朱)、醇士曾臨(朱)、善深書畫(白)|備註:陳洪綬(1599~1652),明末清初著名書畫家、詩人。字章侯,幼名蓮子,一名胥岸,號老蓮,別號小淨名,晚號老遲、悔遲。浙江紹興縣楓橋陳家村人,以賣畫為生,一生以畫見長,尤工人物。所畫人物軀幹偉岸,衣紋線條細勁清圓,晚年則形象誇張,或變態怪異,性格突出。花鳥等描繪精細,設色清麗,富有裝飾味。亦能畫水墨寫意,酣暢淋漓。其畫手法簡練,色彩沉著含蓄,格調高古,享譽明末畫壇。《觀荷圖》絹本,描繪三家觀荷的情景,三家者謂之三教,即為儒、道、釋三教,圖中手持藤杖深色安逸者為佛教,執拂塵者為道教,手持紈扇,侍童手捧瑤琴者謂之儒教,三家思想即為中華之思想,也為左右千年士子的思想。是圖,人物造型線條老練,人物形象,誇張變異,所作者,人物顴骨高聳、耳垂肥大,衣襟飄然,一排仙風,高古之態,設色清新秀麗淡雅,約為作者晚年繪畫作品。圖中間人物者,衣著朱色,暗示主人高貴,隱含儒家思想對歷代的影響,荷花者,輕描淡寫,花枝招展,不見輕薄,附著單色更顯清雅。是圖,歷來被藏家重視,西泠八家之一的陳曼生,清末著名畫家戴熙,當代畫家楊善深等。|來源:香港佳士得,1999年11月,拍品252。
