R. trained as a porcelain painter and then received lessons from Ch. Gleyre. Soon he joined progressive artist circles around Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet and Alfred Sisley. In 1864 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon, later also with the Impressionists. He earned his living with portrait commissions.
