Opulently painted with purple scale pattern and beadwork, naturalistic flowers and rich gilding, the cup with a portrait en grisaille. The original lid painted with the English crown and sceptre in a round medallion, the saucer with maritime attributes amid clouds. Richard Howe (1726 - 1799), a distinguished and meritorious seaman of the British Crown, was promoted to Admiral in 1782 and raised to the peerage as Earl and Baron a few years later.
