Signed and dated lower left: A. Menzel 90 Framed This small pastel is fascinating for its stupendous technique in which Menzel s lifelong preoccupation with chalks and gouache colours is represented most beautifully. The second look is at the pictorial motif itself. It is a snapshot, a scene which could take place every day and everywhere at the entrance to a church space. Menzel looks, sees and paints - no subject is too simple for him, too plain, too banal. Here it is the parallelism of two different worlds which may have seemed worthy of portraying for the painter. Yet it goes far beyond the simple observation that some live in the shadows and others in the light. It is rather the human and existential dimension and its depiction that is the main focus of Menzel s artistic interest. Menzel regularly portrayed church motifs in these later years. An abundance of drawings show portals, pulpits or altars, processions and other church activities, without one having to assume a religious motive on the part of the artist in the strict sense. The motives are more likely to be related to his experiences during his annual summer trips to South Germany and his frequent stays in Kissingen, Munich, Salzburg or Garmisch.来源: German private collection.Gouache and watercolour on thin card
