A couple embracing on a terrace, Mughal, 18th century or later, opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold, painted on a folio from a Persian poetical manuscript, with two lady attendants standing by, one holding a chowry, the other a dish, beyond the terrace lies a garden with flowering trees, cypresses and a willow, 22 x 13.4 cm.The lady being embraced is holding an upside down bottle in her right hand behind her lover back, while he is holding out a cup evidently for more wine, which she is probably denying him. The costumes worn appear to be of the seventeenth century. The man bears a decided resemblance to Jahangir who was notorious for his excess consumption of wine and opium, so perhaps the painting represents a light-hearted view of his dependence.A couple embracing on a terrace, Mughal, 18th century or later, opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold, painted on a folio from a Persian poetical manuscript, with two lady attendants standing by, one holding a chowry, the other a dish, beyond the terrace lies a garden with flowering trees, cypresses and a willow, 22 x 13.4 cm.The lady being embraced is holding an upside down bottle in her right hand behind her lover back, while he is holding out a cup evidently for more wine, which she is probably denying him.
