RETURN FROM THE NIGHT HUNT BY ZHU LIANGCAIChina, dated 1887. Ink and watercolor on segmented paper. The fan-shaped painting depicts two men, one riding a horse, the other walking next to him. They are carrying arrow, bow and a gun. The men just returned from a successful hunt, having shot two birds, which are hanging from the gun. Calligraphy and seal mark on the upper left.Inscriptions: Text (translated): 'On a summer day of the year Dinghai, in the style of Chen Chun (1483-1544). For Ziliang. Liangcai Zhu Zi toiling away in Zhongpu Jixiao Studio'.Zhu Zi (c. 1864-1940), also known as Zhu Liangcai, was an expert calligrapher and master painter of the Hai School. Especially his paintings of figures, flowers and landscapes gained popularity. Zhu Zi lived in Shanghai, where he was known as one of the 'Four Master Painters of Jiangnan'.Provenance: From the collection of Professor Jan Wirgin (1932-2020). Jan Wirgin studied Classic Chinese and History of Art at Stockholm University. Later, he joined the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm, first as a curator and then between 1981-1998 as the director of the museum. Further, he published numerous articles during his work as the editor of the Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities.
