A rare Staffordshire lead-glazed creamware plaque, circa 1755-60A rare Staffordshire lead-glazed creamware plaque, circa 1755-60Of square shape, moulded in relief with a crucifixion scene, numerous figures mourning, the three crucified figures reserved in white highlights against dark green and yellow glazes, pierced for suspension, 16cm squareProvenanceKanter CollectionSampson and Horne Collection, Bonhams, 28 April 2010, lot 202A saltglaze plaque of identical design and inscribed to the reverse with the name 'Wm Simpkin' is in the British Museum (inv. no.1919,0503.79). See also Diana Edwards, 'The Influence of Salt-Glazed Stoneware on Creamware', in Creamware or Pearlware Re-examined (2007), pp.151-2 where another creamware example is illustrated. The mould used for the saltglaze example appears to have been adapted for the creamware versions, including the present lot, as the inscription 'Christ Crucified' has been omitted. Edwards supposes this may indicate that these versions were intended for export.
