A second half of the 18th century mahogany quarter chiming table clock with seven-pillar movementThomas Wagstaff, London The inverted bell top with brass handle over bold cornice, circular and shaped side sound apertures on a moulded plinth base and block feet, the 7 inch arched brass dial with strike/silent subsidiary over the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring framing the finely matted centre with chamfered mock pendulum and date apertures, singed on a recessed silvered signature plaque, the large triple gut fusee movement with substantial plates united by seven knopped pillars, the going train converted to anchor escapement with hourly rack strike on a bell, and chiming the quarters every fifteen minutes on a run of eight bells and hammers, the backplate engraved with a basket of flowers within a full pattern of symmetrical foliate scrollwork 53cms (1ft 9ins) high.Footnotes:Thomas Wagstaff was active in London in Carey Street and Gracechurch Street in 1756-93.
