English School, early 19th century- Portrait of Emperor Napoleon I, bust-length, standing in profile to the left, wearing the National Order of the Legion of Honour; oil on board, stamped with the Austrian Federal Monuments Office 'Vom Bundesdenkmalamt zur Ausfuhr freigegeben' on the reverse, 31.8 x 23.1 cm. Note: Based on Napoleon's uniform here, the present work presumably depicts him in around the year 1804. In fact, the institution of the Legion of Honor, created in 1802, only receives an insignia by imperial decree (as worn by the sitter) in July of that year. The large eyes and prominent nose depicted here possibly derive from illustrations of Napoleon conceived by British caricaturist and printmaker James Gillray (1756-1815). We are grateful to the Château de Fontainebleau for confirming the identity of the sitter as Napoleon and for suggesting the date of c.1804.Please refer to department for condition report
