It specialised in lathes for ornamental turning but also became renowned for its high-quality edge and boring tools. In 1804 John went into partnership with Mannheim-born Johann Georg Deyerlein until the latter's death in 1826, trading under the name Holtzapffel & Deyerlein, as seen on the trade label on the present lot.
