A Regency mahogany boxed set of powders for tool sharpening, by Holtzapffel & Deyerlein, first quarter 19th century, the fitted interior with fifteen pots containing powders of various grades to sharpen lathes and other tools, including emery, oil-stone, pumice stone, chalk, crocus, putty, rouge and tripoli, each with a printed label to lid, the hinged lid with maker's label HOLTZAPFFEL & DEYERLEIN, 64 Charing Cross, Opposite the Kings Mews, London, Manufacturers of Mechanical & Edge Tools, bone escutcheon, 7cm high, 23cm wide, 15cm deepNote: Jean-Jacques (John) Holtzapffel found the Holtzapffel dynasty of tool and lathe makers in 1794. It specialised in lathes for ornamental turning but also became renowned for its high-quality edge and boring tools. In 1804 John went into partnership with Mannheim-born Johann Georg Deyerlein until the latter's death in 1826, trading under the name Holtzapffel & Deyerlein, as seen on the trade label on the present lot.
