When paired with the Samntabhadra, both are revered as the two great servants of Shakyamuni. Manjushri, Samntabhadra, and Skakyamuni are known collectively as the "Three Saints of Hua-yen." In Tibetan Buddhism, Manjushri has many images, and this thangka illustrates the beautiful and solemn image of quiescence. Manjushri wears a five-flower crown with a traditional ushnisha on the head. The figure has stretched earlobes reaching his shoulders, a symbol of an enlightened being, and has a solemn demeanor. He wears a garment of smooth fabric and dons various jewelry, including bracelets. Sitting upon a lotus seat, Manjushri poses with both hands in front of his chest, holding a scroll in the right and a lotus in the left. The thangka is carefully crafted with elegance and balanced proportions. It is a fine example of outstanding workmanship from Ming dynasty.
