玉牛之作，自新石器时代晚期即已出现，经夏代酝酿，在商周时期达到发展的高峰，此后历东周两汉、宋元明时期发展，在清代广泛流行。玉牛数千年演进，形态由抽象及写实，由简约至复杂，题材亦渐蔚为多元。此件作品在一整块呈黑色的玉料上，俏色巧雕恰到好处，采用圆雕的技法琢制而成，抓住了卧牛的动态特点，身体及五官线条流畅、简洁明快，牛的卧姿和憨厚温顺的性格刻画得栩栩如生， 形神兼备，其体态圆润敦实，温顺喜人。
