Inscription in Cyrillic alphabet at the bottom.The Virgin of Vladimir is one of the most venerated devotional images of the Virgin Mary in Russia. The image is a Byzantine icon representation of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child. The origin of the image seems to date back to the 12th century in Constantinople, but it takes its name from the city of Vladimir, where it was transferred from Kiev in 1154 by Prince Andrew I.
