Dutch or Flemish School; second third of the 17th century."Christ and the Angels".Oil on oak panel. It has repainting and restorations.Measurements: 53,5 x 40 cm.The way in which this dramatic image of the death of Christ has been captured is aesthetically conceived in a rigorous and refined way, centring the composition on some figures of great size, still of mannerist heritage in its monumentality. The figure of Christ stands out as the focus of light, radiating a luminosity that falls on the bodies of the angels. The space is barely developed, although it is perfectly constructed thanks to the place where Christ's body is placed, which is marked by the shroud, revealing a structure thanks to the careful folds of fabric. In addition, next to Christ's head, two lighted candles rest on a small table. On a plastic level, this theme highlights the treatment of the partial nude, the effect of gravity and traction on a dead body, the capture of drama and mysticism, the treatment of the folds of the shroud, etc.The iconography represented is that of the dead Christ supported by angels. Unlike other similar works such as the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, this theme is centred on the figure of the dead Christ, eliminating any other biblical character. The unique iconography of this painting can be traced back to the so-called "Christ of Saint Gregory", an oriental icon that represented the Pope's vision of the dead Christ flanked by two angels. Alonso Cano reworked the iconography by creating a personal prototype in which a single angel attends to the inert body. His influence on Spanish Baroque painting was notable, as this canvas shows. In this painting, however, the angel adopts a completely human attitude, taking Jesus' hand in his own and lowering his eyelids with a regretful expression. It thus becomes an intimate wake scene, in which only the stigmata and the wings testify to its biblical origin. Tenebrist lights model the body and bathe the faces; the tactile values are displayed in ochre and gold, applied with naturalistic language.
