Andalusian school, ca. 1700."Bust of the Virgin.Oil on panel.With faults and repainting.With illegible label on the back.Measurements: 16 x 11.5 cm; 27 x 23 cm (frame).The small panel in question, which could well be reminiscent of the style of Juan Ruiz Soriano, a worthy representative of the Sevillian school, shows the effigy of the Virgin Mary. Against an indeterminate dark background is the image of Mary, wearing a very simple cloth that allows her hair to be seen. Depicted very young, she bows her head, lowering her gaze and thus emphasising the virtue of humility. The fineness of her features and the beauty of her proportions stand out, and are further emphasised by the white light that focuses on Mary's face. Seventeenth-century art likes to depict feelings, and in this case it has succeeded in showing a child, Mary, humble and totally submissive to God's will.
