Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A charming mold-formed faience lion of a miniature size presented in a seated pose atop an integral rectangular plinth. The lion has its forelegs extended and supporting its massive upper body, a sinuous tail curled around the retracted haunches, and shoulders shrouded by a regal mane incised with several vertical striations. The countenance is defined by a broad snout flanked by a pair of ovoid eyes, perky ears atop the lightly-rounded head, and puffy jowls surrounding a slightly-open mouth. Covered in a blue-green glaze which has darkened over time, this is an adorable example of fine Egyptian artistry! Custom wooden display stand included.
