AN ARCHAISTIC CELADON-WHITE JADE SWORD GUARD Qing dynasty The V-shaped guard carved in low relief on one side with a coiling chilong, the decoration continuing to the faceted top, the reverse side with low-relief C-scrolls forming a taotie mask, the concave underside pierced vertically with an oval hole. 2 1/4in (5.7cm) across 清 仿古青白玉劍格 For examples of the Western Han prototype see two white jade sword guards carved with a chilong in high relief on one side and a taotie mask in low relief on the reverse, from Xiashan, Yongcheng, Henan province and now in the Henan Provincial Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, Vol. 5, Beijing, 2005, nos. 219 and 220.
