In the inscription, the artist cites Chen Daofu (ca. 1483-1544), also known as Baiyang Shanren, as his inspiration for theposition, and a survey of Zhang Daqian's early work reveals a great indebtedness to the Ming dynasty artist. Here he applies the boneless technique with a casual effortlessness, the brushwork spontaneous and free.
