A SILHOUETTE AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE1750-1860 Of rectangular form with rounded shoulders and a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval footrim, exceptionally well-hollowed, the honey-brown stone with darker brown inclusions resembling birds perched on convoluted rocks overlooking a lake with mountainous peaks in the distance; stopper. 3in (7.5cm) high 1750-1860 影子瑪瑙鷹佇異石鼻煙壺一件 Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, November 3, 1982, lot 215 Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 70 This superbly hollowed out agate bottle is extraordinary for the simple reason that the carver has fashioned the bottle with minimal polishing so that the silhouettes of birds on rockwork are on the narrow sides of the bottle leaving the two main sides smooth and uncluttered by any natural design.
