A SILHOUETTE AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE1750-1860 Of rounded form with a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval foot, very well-hollowed, the honey-brown stone with darker brown inclusions polished on one main side with a design suggestive of a bird of prey perched on a rock looking back towards a leafy tree growing from a grassy bank, the reverse with abstract inclusions; stopper. 2 1/4in (5.6cm) high 1750-1860 影子瑪瑙鼻煙壺一件 Provenance: Eldred's Auction Gallery, August 1993 Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 217 This collection houses a number of high quality silhouette agate bottles. This example is unusual in that the darker brown inclusions use almost half of the surface area of the front of the bottle. Yet the carver is able to use a minimal amount of polishing to make the natural scene clear.
