Philip Core, American/British 1951-1989 - George Melly and friends, 1979; coloured pencil on paper menu from 'Langan's Brasserie', signed, dedicated, inscribed and dated along left edge 'for George - my diary looses a page - love Philip Core 27th April 1979', 29.6 x 41.7 cm (ARR) Provenance: purchased from the George Melly Estate Note: Core moved permanently to London in 1975, creating works in a light, playful style inspired by Pop art. An example of his work is now in the Arts Council Collection, Southbank Centre. The work is dedicated to and depicts George Melly (1926-2007), a famous jazz musician, critic and art historian, particularly interested in the Surrealist movement. It is drawn on an iconic Langan's Brasserie menu, designed by David Hockney, and depicting the owner's Peter Langan, Richard Shepherd and Michael Caine.
