(173cm. x 135cm.)The rhomboid medallion in the centre of the rug seems to be a mirrored version of a common design, featuring a cypress tree set within a niche. A prayer rug of that type, attributed to Karabagh, are published in R. Kaffel, Caucasian Prayer Rugs, London, 1998, p. 68, while another sold in Christie’s New York, 8 December 2008, lot 1. The ultimate origin of the design may have been with Persian ikat velvets, such as those illustrated in J. L. Larsen, The Dyer’s Art: Ikat, Batik, Plangi, New York, 1976, p.181 and in HALI 200, summer 2019, p.61.
