A Chinese famille rose bowl, 19th century, the rounded sides rising from a circular foot to an everted rim, painted with the story of Xuanji Tu (The Star Gauge) in shaped panels against a diapered ground, the interior with five goldfish in a pond, 11.8cm diameter Written by the Sixteen Kingdoms poetess, Su Hui, to her husband in the 4th century, Xuanji Tu consists of a 29 x 29 grid of characters. This can be read in different ways to form some 3,000 smaller rhyming poems.
