A JAPANESE TONKOTSU AND KISERUZUTSU Late 19th Century A well-used smoking set including a wood tobacco box, ( tonkotsu ) shaped as a human skull with a coiled snake coming out of its eye socket, signed to the underside of the cover, with a nut skull-shaped ojime bead and a wood pipe holder ( senryu-zutsu ) carved as a snake constricting a frog, the bamboo smoking pipe ( kiseru ) with plain unmarked silver fittings, all contained in a later wood storage box, 7cm high - 20cm long (3) For a very similar snake pipe holder see Christie’s London, 13th July 2006, lot 519.
