While the consignor's family lived in India they met Satish Gujral and became friends. While Gujral was visiting New York to work on a commission for the World Trade Center, he visited the consignor's family, who, at this point, had returned to the United States. In return for the lovely meal, he gifted them this artwork. It has been in their collection ever since.Satish Gujral was a multi-disciplinary artist that created sculptures, paintings, murals, architecture and interior design. He was considered an Avant Garde Indian artist. Gujral traveled in Mexico in 1952 and worked under Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros. Gujral was inspired by the textural qualities of the Mexican artists' works.In this collage, Gujral engaged his distinctive sense of surface quality by using mixed media collage technique to depict a whimsical figure. The figure is created with typesetting and visual references of the 1960s in its body, whose fantastical proportion inject a sense of humor and comedy into the composition.
