A polychrome porcelain dish on wooden stand, decorated with 'The Bull's Cruelty' (also known as 'The wonder of Zaandam'), after an anonymous painting. The rim with flowers. Dated 'Den 29 Augustus 1647'. China, around 1747. Diam. 22.5 cm.Literature:Auction catalogue 'Christie's London, The Dr Anton C.R. Dreesman Collection, European Furniture and Chinese Export Porcelain', 10 April 2002, p. 293, no. 1318. Depicted is a drama that took place in Zaandam on 29 August, 1647. A farmer (Jacob Egh) and his wife were attacked by a bull. The bull was probably startled by a boy flying a kite. The wife was thrown up in the air and gave, at that moment, birth to her son. The parents died directly after the drama and the child survived, but died nine months later. The family is buried in the 'Bullenkerk' or 'Westzijderkerk' in Zaandam. The painting of the drama (anonymous, 1726) is in this churchas well.
