A CARVED CHENXIANGMU 'JIAO SUI' CUP 17th/18th centuryA CARVED CHENXIANGMU 'JIAO SUI' CUP17th/18th centuryCarved in high relief around the exterior with a scene depicting two of the 'Eight Drunken Immortals' and an attendant in a mountainous landscape, the rich brown wood with smooth patina, inscribed on the body with a line of a seven-character poem. 8.6cm (3 3/8in) high; 7.5cm (3in) wide. Libation cups carved from chenxiangmu generally resemble rhinoceros horn cups in appearance, compare with a related late Ming dynasty chenxiangmu carved 'landscape' brushpot inscribed by Jiangchunbo in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p.21, no.20; see also a 18th century chenxiangmu 'Drunken Eight Immortals' cup, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 22 April 2021, lot 3659.
