Sprinkhaan (Grasshopper) (1935)Signed with monogram and dated 3-'35 in the plate lower rightPublished in 1940 as a contribution to the art journal Halcyon, Driemaandelijksch Tijdschrift voor Boek-, Druk- en Prentkunst, The HagueWood engraving, 181 x 242 mm (image size) / 248 x 325 mm (sheet size)Provenance:Private collection, the NetherlandsLiterature:Bool 271Note:This present lot reveals the careful precision with which M.C. Escher drew insects. Just as he did in his mezzotint 'Mummified Frog', his wood engravings 'Scarabs' and 'Libellula (Dragonfly)' and the lithograph 'Ant', this grasshopper is an example of how Escher holds a mangnifying glass over a tiny creature. The insect stands on a mirroring surface on which the small details of its head, body, and legs are reflected. The grasshopper radiates an unyielding presence, defying his tiny stature. Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request.
