A Chinese export silver cocktail shakerPohing, Shanxi, late Qing dynastyWith silver-gilt lozenge monogrammed in Chinese "Willard Dickerman Straight" (American, 1880-1918), with maker`s mark and two-character Chinese mark to underside.Notes: Willard Dickerman Straight was a prominent businessman, publisher, and diplomat married in 1911 to Dorothy Payne Whitney (1887-1968) of the historic and wealthy Whitney family. He served in China in the late 19th century as part of the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs Service. He also served as a correspondent for Reuters during the Russo-Japanese War and as Vice Consul of Korea in 1905, before moving on to diplomatic posts in Cuba and then France during World War I. He and his wife founded The New Republic in 1914 and Asia Magazine in 1917. H: 8 7/8, Dia; 3 7/8 in.
