The race saw the challenger,Australia II, successfully ending the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak, the longest in sporting history and U.S. domination of the racing series. The final race was televised in Australia in the early hours of 27 Sep 1983, and the victory was celebrated across Australia.Pan Shou visited Perth for the first time on 26 Sep 1983, and was in awe that he witnessed this historical moment just hours after his arrival. In the 'footnote', not only does he provide the background for this historical moment, he also describes how the event sends seismic waves across the country.
