Presently Wang Dongling is the director of the Calligraphy Study Center at the National Academy. Arguably the foremost calligrapher in China today, his work has been the subject of the three solo exhibitions at the National Museum of China. Wang Dongling's calligraphy is deeply immersed in tradition yet striking in its innovative approach. Unlike his pre-modern predecessors who practiced calligraphy for self-cultivation, Wang Dongling brings out the performative aspect of the writing process and turns it into a public event. In the Ming dynasty, Xu Wei (1521-1593) pioneered such a style, which was further extended by Wang Dongling by disrupting the rules of spacing and legibility and incorporating more body gestures.
