The exterior of the body is finely painted with fine intense copper-red to depict an extraordinary five-clawed dragon in aggressive forward motion amidst clouds in underglaze-blue. The undulating body with detailed scaly hide and saw-like spine accented with flowing tufts of hair at the joints, brandishing one foot with five razor-like claws to capture the legendary `flaming pearl`. The clouds are rendered in a much more stylized manner than those on the usual 18th century porcelain, attesting of the innovative character of the Yongzheng productions. A wave band below the rim between a double lines border circling a rectangle comprising the six characters mark applied in a line. The base unglazed.Height : 53 cmDiameter: 38 cmProvenance : North of France private collection, by descent. An important firing defect around the body and the junction in the lower part creating a recessed part. Frits and glaze chips to the mouth rim. The porcelain with an overall greish aspect in the white parts, possibly from a global firing defectFor a similar vase see Sotheby’s Hong Kong, october 31st 2004, lot 25.
