The central cell displays a stone intaglio engraved with a left-facing portrait of Hermes, depicted in the Archaic Greek fashion. The back is plain and unworked. Adopted in the Roman pantheon as Mercury, he was the messenger of the gods and an important deity in the Graeco-Romano pantheon.
