Environs de Haarlem (1860s)Signed and remains of date 6? lower leftOil on panel, 50.6 x 78.1 cmProvenance:- Kunsthandel E.E. Huisman, The Hague (inv.no. 2974)- Private collection, the Netherlands- Auction Venduehuis, The Hague, 21 November 2018, lot 246Note:The landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout had a penchant for the landscape surrounding Haarlem. Quite early on, from 1820 onwards, he was inspired by this rolling, scenic area with its fine panoramas. In this painting, Schelfhout depicted Haarlem on the horizon, with in the foreground a dune, a river, and a herd of sheep walking on a small road under a beautiful cloudy sky. Following the lead of Schelfhout, the quintessentially Dutch landscape surrounding Haarlem became a favourite amongst the painters of Dutch Romanticism. Together with B.C. Koekkoek, Schelfhout is considered the Netherlands’ most important romantic landscape painter. He had many pupils, including Charles Leickert, L.J. Kleijn, Nicolaas Roosenboom, and, surprisingly, the innovative impressionist J.B. Jongkind.* Condition report available upon request
