AN OUTSTANDING PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER JARS AND COVERS Qianlong period, circa 1750 The baluster vases with covers of ovoid form decorated in opaque rose enamel with a pheasant on a blue rock, surrounded by tree peonies, the knops to the covers are molded as large lotus buds, the decoration rises from the narrow base and spreads across the waist of the vases, leaving a generous area of white porcelain as open space. 18 1/2in (47cm) high (2). 21 The proportions of the vases and the decorations are expertly realized. The artist has allowed a generous spacing between the various flowerheads that populate the surface and the branches rise gently around the vessels from the central design of a golden pheasant raising its glorious tail feathers whilst balanced atop a large, pierced rockwork outcrop. This design appears on Yongzheng period famille rose porcelains, such as this dish in the Palace Museum of Beijing https://www.dpm.org.cn/collection/ceramic/227091.html. The slightly bulbous lower section above the foot is a typical Yongzheng feature of such vases and here is highlighted by the delicately enameled pendant jewelry lappets.
