David Butler (1898-1997) Rooster Sculpture, Good Hope, Louisiana, c. 1980, painted sheet metal, unmarked, ht. 9 3/4 in.Provenance The Outsider and Folk Art Collection of Gene and Judy Kohn. Purchased from the Gasperi Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, May 1985.Note Butler spent his entire life in Ouachita Parish. Leaving school at an early age to care for younger siblings, he worked as a laborer in many jobs. Forced to retire in the early 1960s, he started to decorate his home, yard, and bicycle with metal sculptures.
