A so-called Mask of Shame (ger. Schandmaske). A quite quirky and very successfully aplished Obscure Cabinet object. Whimsical recreation of that instrument of punishment, as a form of public humiliation, from the Historism period in the fashion of the 14 to 18th centuries period.Related to the Scold Branks (designed with a bridle-bit to prevent the punished individual from speaking), by which wearers were forced to suffer a muzzle-like facemask, originating both physical and psychological pain. All those devices caused physiological trauma to scare and intimidate the wearer into submission.Large, elaborately hammered, and skillfully patinated iron mask in the shape of a grotesque face with ludicrous facial features, bulging eyes, and bizarre smile. One-piece embossed mask surface and bowl with riveted edges. Exceptionally well-hammered stylized facial features and continuous, riveted rim. Work with a lot of passion for detail, finely hammered with pewter seams, and very careful welding.Great Britain or Central Europe. 19th's Ct last Quarter. Height (mask) 34 cm - (mask plus suspension hoop) 37 cm. Width 29 cm. Depth 7 cm. Patinated tin copper, and iron. Weight 400 gr. Metal stand not included.
