此方砚台，端石制，形制方正，原配木盒，石质紧密易下墨，砚堂四周起框，砚底为苍松骏马图，以减地浅浮雕技法，刻出苍松之形，枝干遒劲，松鳞错落斑驳，宛若龙鳞，其上松针遍布枝头，如云如盖。骏马绕树站立，苍松遮挡住部分马之躯体，如同瓷器中常见的“过墙”手法，寓意吉祥，古意盎然。就制砚之材来说，唐以来，砚材出现很多种类，其中以端砚、歙砚、洮河砚、澄泥砚最为突出，号称“四大名砚”，而端砚则位列其首，名扬天下。
