A HENAN BLACK-GLAZED BOWL, NORTHERN SONG OR JIN DYNASTYChina, 960-1234. The deep rounded sides rising from a short foot, the interior finished with a thick ridge below the rim, covered overall with a brown-black glaze, thinning at the rim to a russet-brown, almost cinnamon color, stopping unevenly above the foot to expose the buff gray stoneware body.Provenance: From the collection of an important German scholar, assembled between 1961 and 1966, and thence by descent in the same family. An old collector’s inventory label to the base reading ‘238’.Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including crackling to the glaze. The foot with few tiny chips. Light surface scratches.
