A RUBY-RED OVERLAY SNOWFLAKE GLASS ‘SCHOLAR’ SNUFF BOTTLE, GUANGXU MARK AND PERIODChina, 1875-1908. The ovoid body supported on a short foot and rising to a tall cylindrical neck, finely carved through the outer ruby-red layer to one side with a scholar raising a bag toward the sky below a bat with a lingzhi sprig in its mouth, his youthful attendant with a similar offering, and to the other with the same scholar and attendant walking through a rocky landscape amid pines, lingzhi, and swirling clouds. One rock carved with a three-character inscription in relief. The base with an incised minuscule four-character markGuangxu nianzhi and of the period.Inscriptions: To one side, ‘Shihejin’ (possibly a studio name).Provenance: From the collection of Chip and Muffy Matthews, St. Louis, USA. Churchill “Chip” Matthews, Jr. (1940-2021) and Martha “Muffy” Matthews were American collectors of Chinese snuff bottles who traveled extensively. Chip was a US army veteran, who founded the noted medicalpany Wrymark Inc. in 1989.
